Surgeons mainly use this tool during tonsil removal surgery to separate the tonsils from surrounding tissues. It's also helpful in other throat surgeries where they need to push tissues aside and see the area better.

Surgeons like it because it does two jobs at once you dissect tissue with one end and hold things back with the hook on the other end. This saves time and means they don't have to switch between multiple instruments during the operation.

The hooked end gently pulls back the throat tissue so the surgeon can see the tonsil area clearly. It keeps soft tissues out of the way so the doctor can work safely without accidentally damaging anything.

The Hurd has a bigger spoon-shaped end that's great for pushing tissues apart gently. The Mollison has a thinner, slightly sharper blade that works better for cleaner cuts, so each one works differently depending on what the surgeon prefers.

Absolutely, this tool is made from strong stainless steel, so you can sterilize it in an autoclave many times without damaging it. After proper cleaning and heating in the sterilizer, it works just as well as new every single time.
